Summary
This project proposes the energy transition towards a model based on 100% renewable energies using second generation biomass (used oils or castor oil) that, therefore, does not compete with food. On the one hand, it seeks to increase the proportion of biofuels in gasoline and diesel to meet the objectives of the EU, while the abundant mobile stock in our country (over 30 million) is being replaced by electric vehicles or vehicles that operate with a hydrogen fuel cell. On the other, it takes advantage of biomass to obtain compounds of interest (ethers and solketal), used as additives to improve the characteristics of biofuels and reduce emissions to the environment and raises the revalorization of glycerin (by-product in the manufacture of biodiesel) in hydrogen, which could be used as a 100% renewable fuel.
The proposal is based on previous results of our research group, in each of the proposed lines. Specifically, as a starting point in fuel mixtures, Ecodiesel will be used, among others, a biofuel that integrates glycerin in its composition, which represents significant energy and water savings associated with cleaning the biofuel to remove glycerin. The challenge is to determine the maximum amount of biofuel in double and triple blends, compatible with current energy and environmental requirements. In the case of obtaining additives, our experience in heterogeneous acid catalysis will be used, seeking to improve the performance of the desired products by resorting to novel methods such as, for example, the use of microemulsions. Finally, the production of hydrogen seeks to make the most of sunlight, so abundant in Andalusia. All this would contribute to placing both our group and Andalusia at the forefront of bioeconomy research.
