Biological accidents

Biological risk is defined as: exposure or contact with blood or body fluids such as urine, amniotic fluid, pleural fluid, among others that may be contaminated with infectious germs such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.

Biological agents are the main risk of exposure due to frequent contact with patients, blood and contamination with bodily fluids through punctures or injuries from accidents during the handling of contaminated objects.

Among the main biological agents and cause of health problems, we have:

- Virus (Hepatitis B, HIV, Herpes Virus, Influenza, Parotiditis, Rubella).

- Bacteria (TB, staphylococci, streptococci, chlamydia, gonococci).

- Fungi (Candidiasis).

- Protozoa (Amibiasis).

- Parasites (Helminthiasis).

Ways of entry:

The exposure and subsequent infection of an individual by a biological agent can take place in several ways:

• Oral (ingestion)

• Respiratory (inhalation)

• Ocular (through the conjunctiva)

• Parenteral (punctures)

• Dermal (through injuries and / or breaks in the skin)

Being of all of them the respiratory route the one of greater probability.

Infective doses for man vary with:

• The biological agent

• The way of entry

• Host resistance, that is, the degree of integrity of their defensive systems.
