I graduated with a first-class degree and honours in Biology from University of Extremadura in 2006. I then stayed on at Extremadura, studying the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans, and successfully defended my PhD in 2011. In 2012, my interest in the molecular drivers of core biological processes led me to a postdoctoral position in the research group of Sir Paul Nurse at Cancer Research UK, before moving to Imperial College London/MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences in 2015. For more than five years, under the supervision of Professor Luis Aragón, I explored chromosome biology applying cutting-edge single-molecule technologies to the mechanistic study of Structural Maintenance of Chromosome (SMC) complexes during their interaction with DNA.

In January 2023 I joined the Fusarium Lab at the University of Córdoba. I am intrigued about the role of DNA motor proteins in the regulation of genome architecture in the distinct context of fungal pathogenesis. I am keen on contributing to advancing the knowledge about fundamental aspects of genomic plasticity and virulence but also on exploiting the full potential of single-molecule technologies in the development of innovative antifungal strategies.
