Escritos feministas. Mary Astell
Pascual Garrido, María Luísa
Cátedra
2013
This is the first Spanish edition of Mary Astell's most relevant essays. A leading proto-feminist thinker and influential essayist, Astell defended women's education and intellectual independence as a precondition to achieve female happiness in A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, part I (1694) and Some Reflections Upon Marriage (1700), which are offered here in Spanish. She also engaged in some of the most important philosophical debates of the age, opposing Locke and siding with English Platonic rationalists on the issue of human understanding. With its preliminary study and cultural and linguistic annotations, the edition offers the main works of one of the forerunners of the feminist movement in England, whose work has just recently been rescued from oblivion.
