 Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT) and Specialised Translation (Tourism): a Key Combination to Foster English Learning

Abstract
Didactic Audiovisual Translation (henceforth, DAT) consists of the use of tasks based on Audiovisual Translation (AVT) in which students are expected to produce audiovisual products to develop their language skills in an integrated way. Specialised Translation requires a deep knowledge of a field that is not usually part of the general knowledge. Translation for Tourism is an emerging discipline within the field of Specialised Translation. This experience consists of the development and implementation of a DAT-based lesson plan on Audio Description (AD) which aims at fostering language skills through the translation of audiovisual touristic texts. The lesson plan has been tested with N = 22 participants enrolled in the third year of the Degree in Tourism in Italy. This study explores participants’ perceptions on the process of doing the lesson plan and on the development of the language skills through this task-based approach. The results show that participants perceive they have improved their language and cultural skills, and that they find the task motivating and enriching. Further studies with a longer sequence consisting of more LP and a bigger sample is required to validate the results.
