The SMILESENG programme offers ordinary sessions in which participants will be able to share and discuss their work with the community on any of the topics related to the summer school. Talks by PhD students at any stage of their PhD are especially welcome, as they will serve to present their work in progress and receive constructive feedback from senior researchers. The talk should be classified into one of the following types:

  • Bachelor’s and master’s thesis / PhD proposal. The aim is to allow students to present a summary of the work carried out as part of a bachelor’s or master’s thesis (in progress or recently completed) or a PhD thesis in progress. In the case of PhD students, the talk is expected to describe the starting hypothesis and objectives of the work, the proposed methodology (data, methods, etc.) and first results, if any. For this type of contribution, the student is expected to be the first author, who should be registered as an in-place or online participant.
  • New ideas and work in progress. The aim of this contribution is to share new ideas and ongoing work with the community. These talks should be focused on challenges and innovative ways to address a research or industrial problem. If applicable, preliminary and/or negative results are welcome to foster discussion. For this type of contribution, at least one author should be registered as in-place or online participant.
  • Data and tool showcase. The aim is to present a dataset or tool recently created, either as part of a project or as an open contribution to the community. For datasets, information about sources, methodology and availability is expected. For prototypes and tools, a short description of the purpose, architecture and examples of use should be explained. If available, please link to the repository or website from which the dataset or tool can be accessed. For this type of submission, at least one author should be registered as in-place or online participant.

In the registration form (first step of the registration process – before the 22nd of May), authors will be asked to indicate the type of contribution, as well as to provide a title and short abstract (up to 300 words). They will be notified regarding the suitability of the topic and type of talk. When confirmed by the organisation, the authors should send an extended summary by email (smileseng@uco.es) before the 3rd of June. The paper should not exceed 2 pages in length. Please see the instructions and format below. All submitted works will be included in a open-access proceedings volume of the Summer School.

Instructions to prepare the submission

Contributions should follow the IEEE LaTeX template available in Overleaf. All papers should include the following information: title, author/s, abstract (up to 300 words) and keywords. The structure of the paper will depend on the type of talk, and could be slightly adapted at the author’s convenience:

  • Bachelor’s and master’s thesis / PhD proposal. Please include information about the dissertation/proposal (university, supervisors, etc.), introduction, hypothesis and objectives, research methodology, and initial results (if any).
  • New ideas and work in progress. Please include an introduction, (short) related work/background, proposed approach or method, preliminary results, conclusions (possibly including challenges or open issues).
  • Data showcase. Please include an introduction to the research for which the dataset is created, data sources, methodology (extraction, curation, etc.), basic statistics (if applicable), and availability.
  • Tool showcase. Please include an introduction to the research in which the tool is being developed, purpose, architecture or design, functionalities, examples (if possible), and availability.

The paper should not exceed 2 pages in length, including references. Please, use American English in your manuscript. Submissions should be sent by email to smileseng@uco.es for inclusion in the proceedings (deadline: June 3, 2022). Please attach all source files required for compilation in a ZIP file when sending the camera-ready.

Should you have any question, please send an email to smileseng@uco.es including “[Talk]” as part of the subject.
