Profile, admission requirements and training complements
Access requirements and admission criteria
The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program (CAPD) is the body in charge of establishing the access procedures and admission criteria, which are in line with current national legislation and with the regulations that regulate Doctoral Studies at the University of Córdoba
In the following link you can find the modalities of access to Doctoral studies, as well as the processes, documentation and deadlines for admission.
The CAPD in Advanced Computing, Energy and Plasma may proceed to the conditional admission of the candidate, without being able to enroll in academic supervision of Doctoral studies. The reasons that can give rise to a conditional admission are:
- Passing complementary training. When, in consideration of the aptitudes and qualifications of the candidate, it is appropriate that they pass the additional training that is legally determined prior to their incorporation into the Doctoral Program
- The presentation of supporting documentation of administrative requirements. When the applicant meets the admission requirements but is still awaiting formalization of the documentation or other administrative requirements (legalization of foreign documents, translation of documents, etc.)
If the requirements are not met before the end of the second enrollment period for academic supervision of Doctoral studies, admission will be canceled for all purposes.
There is a series of Research Masters that give direct access to this Doctoral Program, which are the following:
- Master in Intelligent Systems (in extinction)
- Master in Distributed Renewable Energies (Researcher Profile)
- Master in Industrial Process Control (in extinction)
- Master in Computer Engineering (in extinction)
- Master in Computational Intelligence and Internet of Things (Researcher profile)
Students who have completed Research Master's degrees other than those that give access to this Doctoral Program will have to present the complete documentation of their training when applying for Admission, so that the CAPD can decide whether it is necessary to carry out Complementary Training prior to admission to the Doctorate or during the first year of the Doctorate.
Regarding foreign language proficiency, students will be required to have accredited level B1 of English, although level B2 is recommended.
Entry profile and complementary training
The profile of the students of the Doctoral Program in advanced computing, energy and plasmas will be that of graduates or graduates in physics, engineers, graduates in computer and industrial engineering who hold a master's degree with a research profile related to the lines of program research. Regarding foreign language proficiency, students will be required to have accredited level B1 of English, although level B2 is recommended.
Once the candidacy to be admitted to the Doctoral Program has been received and the mandatory regulatory requirements, previous training, curricular background, motivation of the applicant and the Doctoral Thesis Work proposal have been analyzed, the CAPD may establish a proposal of complementary training based fundamentally on the follow-up of the courses offered in the context of the official master's degrees of the University of Córdoba for those candidates who need it. This proposal will be attached to the resolution for admission to the Program that the candidates receive.
For the purposes of public prices and the granting of scholarships and study grants, this complementary training will be considered as Doctorate level training and its development will not count for the purposes of the duration limit of the doctoral thesis indicated in the current Regulations.
For the establishment of this complementary training the scale approved by the Commission of Masters and Doctorates of the University of Córdoba will be taken into account.
Complementary training will be compulsory for those students who access the program while only in possession of a graduate degree of 300 ECTS credits or more, which does not include research training credits in their study plan.
Complementary training in the Doctoral Program is obtained from two sources. The first from the transversal research subjects offered by the Postgraduate Studies Institute, and the second from the methodological research subjects offered by each of the master's degrees that make up the training period of the Programme. The selection of the subjects that a student applying for admission must take will be the responsibility of the Academic Council of the Program in view of the previous training of the applicant, in agreement with the student's Tutor, in order to guarantee appropriate and uniform training among all the students of the program. In exceptional cases, a subject from any of the other master's degrees in the postgraduate offer of the University of Córdoba may be recommended as a complement to the training.

Description | Open-source hardware to protect embedded processors |
Topic |
Embedded processors can be protected by deriving trust using a Root-of-Trust (RoT). A hardware RoT uses, as a device secret, a digital identifier derived from hardware. This could be implemented using a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) that exploits tiny variations in the silicon manufacturing processes of semiconductor circuitry. Neither PUF designer nor chip manufacturer knows these secret keys. Other usual building blocks of the RoT are a source of entropy and crypto functions to implement encryption/decryption algorithms and digital signatures. The combination of these components can provide a full suite of security services for an embedded system: device authentication, on-line generation of reliable cryptographic keys, hardware-enabled secure booting and security protocols. Some illustrative examples of a hw RoT for a RISC-V processor will be described. This work has been supported by the EU-funded projects SPIRS (GA 952622), GOIT (GA 101070660), and QUBIP (GA 101119746) |

Decription | What's in deep learning for monocular localization and mapping? |
Topic | Estimating 6-DoF camera poses and reconstructing 3D scenes from multiple views are foundational challenges in the field of computer vision. Over the past three to four decades, the development of solid geometric principles and techniques for extracting and matching visual features with a reasonable degree of invariance has resulted in remarkably accurate and resilient geometric estimation methods, many of which have found their way into commercial applications. Since the emergence of the first deep networks in 2012, which demonstrated exceptional performance in 2D recognition tasks, researchers have been intrigued by the potential application of such models in 3D reconstruction tasks and the advantages they could bring. In this presentation, Prof. Civera will provide an overview of recent research conducted by our group, focusing on the interplay between deep learning and multiview geometry. Topics covered will include among others place recognition, single-view depth estimation, and modeling non-rigid scenes. |

Control and follow-up
The follow-up of doctoral students is carried out both continuously (through the activities notebook) and through activities scheduled annually (annual follow-up).
For continuous monitoring, the University of Córdoba has a computer application (SIGMA) available to doctoral students in which all activities, both compulsory and optional, that are part of the comprehensive training of doctoral students will be recorded. When registering the research plan, and from then on in the annual follow-up, the doctoral students must submit to the CAPD of the PD a proposal of the activities and objectives of the work to be carried out that year, which will have the approval of the thesis directors and the tutor. If they are not activities already established as mandatory by the Program, their workload and the procedure that will be used for their evaluation must be made explicit.
Each time the doctoral student performs one of these activities, they must register it in the aforementioned application and their tutor or director must validate it and accept it as a training activity for the doctoral student. Every year, the doctoral students will send the supporting documentation of the activities carried out to the Institute of Postgraduate Studies
In order for the PhD students to present the development of their research plan, especially in relation to the methodology and the most significant advances and results achieved, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program will appoint one or more integrated Monitoring Committees annually, made up of three PhDs, one of whom must be external to the Doctoral Program and the remaining two heads of research teams attached to the Program. If the necessary financial means are available, an international expert will be appointed as a doctor from outside the Doctoral Program. Likewise, the document of activities carried out and the reports that for this purpose must be issued by the person tutoring and/or directing the thesis will be presented.
The Monitoring Commission must prepare an individual report with the assessment of the work carried out and the degree of progress in relation to the previous year. This assessment will take into account the degree of compliance and the evaluations obtained in the training activities, as well as the aforementioned reports. The positive evaluation will be an essential requirement to continue in the Program. In the event of a negative evaluation, which will be duly motivated, the doctoral student will undergo a new evaluation within a period of six months, for which purpose a new research plan will be drawn up. In the event of a new negative evaluation, it will cause definitive withdrawal from the Program.
The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program will send the results of the follow-up to the Institute of Postgraduate Studies annually, on the date established by the Master's and Doctorate Committee. If, during the course of the academic year, significant modifications are made to the work plan presented, these must be communicated by the doctoral student, with the approval of their director, to the Academic Committee, which will communicate its resolution within a maximum period of 20 days.
